TWITTER!!!!!
Yep that’s right another social networking tool for the masses. However is Twitter just the buzz of the week, or is Twitter here to stay, destined to become stronger and more popular?
So what is Twitter?
Twitter is a way for family and friends to stay in touch and up to date with one another via “Status.” A Twitter status is a combination of instant messaging and text messaging. Unlike its counter parts Myspace and Facebook, Twitter’s users are only allotted 140 characters, plenty for a quick, witty, and personal update. Once these updates are posted people can see immediately what that person is doing and what on their mind and then in turn respond to them.
How Did Twitter Get It’s Start?
Twitter was created by Jack Dorsey and became available to the public May of 2007. Since its debut Twitter has become an internet frenzy among a wide variety of people. High school students, parents, the elderly, businesses, and even celebrities. Its even been featured on the news many times. Twitter has been given the name of “MicroBlogging” for the fact that it is very similar to a blog, just has a limit on what you can write in a single post.
Do You Speak Twitter?
Yes that’s right Twitter has its own language. The original word ” Twitter” is broken down, altered, changed a tad, or has relation to names of the actions you can perform on Twitter. Such as:
- A Follower- This is someone, who…well, follows. They keep up to date with your tweets.
- A Tweet- Your status updates are better known to those on twitter as a tweet.
- A Re-Tweet- After you post a tweet, your followers may Re-Tweet (copy what you wrote) you if they liked what you had to say, and it will show up on their twitter for their followers to see. If you are following them it will also show up on yours. Credit for the poster of the original tweet is given.
- A mention- This is the ability to reply to a tweet. By using the @ sign then the person screen name, you may post your comment or add to their tweet.
- Follow Friday- This is Twitter tradition for Fridays. By placing #FF then the users name, you can recommend them to people to follow.
- Trending Topics- These are the most talked about things being tweeted.
- TwitPic- This allows you to post pictures in your tweets.
- Twitterverse- The world of Twitter People.
- The Fail Whale- Overcapacity is common on twitter (as it is pretty popular) so there is a way to let you know this has happened. The Fail Whale. During this time you will not be able to tweet or read tweets.
Those are just a few of the terms those in the Twitterverse are familiar with, the most common. There are others and for that you may search through the Twittonary.
