There are two main types of straw design, “Polypropylene” which is becoming much more favored over the second type of straw that is made out of “Polystyrene.” The main reason for this is that manufacturing plastic drinking straws as polystyrene are very brittle and the tend to crack easily, and no one likes a cracked straw. Polypropylene is also denser than water so this causes the straws to sink when placed into beverages. So both of these types of straws are really just plastic so they cant be all that bad and they make drinking so convenient. This information also might not be something that you have locked away in your “Things To Remember” files but most soft drinks are very acidic and can actually cause tooth decay when drank straight from the glass, can, bottle what ever you happen to be drinking out of at the moment. If a simple straw can help prevent tooth decay and cavities, why is it that people don’t care to use them? Now there are a lot of straws to choose from, yes that right you have variety when it comes to your straws. They all have their own attitudes and some in fact can be quite fun and are that finishing touch to a very well made margarita. Straws are not as scary as you might think and they are certainly not going to kill you, so lets take a look at what we are dealing with.
Types Of Straws
- The Basic Drinking Straw- This straw is straight as a stick, a really straight stick.
- A Bendable Straw- Or the “Bendy Straw” as it is better known has a hinge type section at the top of the straw for for convenience of bending when taking a drink.
- The “Crazy” Straw- This is a hard plastic straw that has a good amount of twist in it that makes drinking super fun. When you suck the liquid through the straw, it very quickly flows through windy path, and this can be quite entertaining if I do say so myself.
- A Spoon Straw- The fantastic features of this straw is a cut-away shape at one end that acts as a tiny spoon like tip and is most commonly used for Slurpee’s.
- Candy Straws- These straws are more commonly known as licorice straws or “Lico-Straws.”These delicious edible straws are made from some type of chewy candy, and how cool is that, a straw and a snack all in one.
- The Miniature Straw- This type of straw is a very tiny version of the original and can be found attached to the back or the front of a juice box.
- A Wide Straw- These unique straws are used for drinking what is called a “Bubble Tea or Smoothie.” These types of straws are needed for sucking the tapioca balls that are usually added to these drinks.
- The Wrapped Straw- Also known as the “Sanitary Straws” are individually wrapped in paper or plastic in order to avoid contamination.
- The Sipahh Straw- This is a drinking straw that contains flavored tapioca beads inside the straw itself that will magically dissolve as milk is passed through them or over them. This adds a different color and flavor to the milk itself.
- The Cereal Straw- This is a fairly recent add in to the straw family, mainly targeted at kids, siply put it in your cereal one you are finished and get all that yummy milk left in the bowl. You can even just put it in your glass of milk and add a little fun to it.
- Color Changer Straws- This straw is specially designed to change the color of a liquid as it passes through it.
The point I am trying to really get to is this, have you ever been sitting in a restaurant ans taken a moment to look around to see just who is actually using straws? I mean seriously the waiters and waitresses take the time to place them on the table but how many people take the time to put them in their drinks. This is something that just peaked my interest one day while i was enjoying a lovely meal at Bj’s Restaurant & Brewery. The results were very interesting to me as i noticed that straws seems to be a female thing for the most part but some men do take part in the festivities as well. However what is is about this thin tube used for transferring liquid to our mouths that is so intimidating to some?
Men Vs. Women
So what is it about the straw that just does not tickle your fancy here fellas? Is it unmasculine, humiliating, or just down right weird for a man to be sucking on something? I have noticed the like 7 out of 10 times a man would rather just drink straight from the cup that take the time to unwrap and place the straw in his soft drink, water, tea ya know whatever. Does it really make you feel like more of a man to just grab your cup of whatever and slam it down like your the champion of drinking. Oh and women why is it that you will chase down, or have your man chase down, the server just to get a straw? I can understand that drawing attention to your mouth is sexy and men like it but i dont see the big deal really. I personally am content either way straw or no straw.
The Conclusion
So I guess I am just gonna have to make my own interpritation of this mystery and go ahead to say that drinking out of starws is a feminine thing. However it will always be in the back of my mind as to if that is the real truth to this matter at hand. Yes i could just go up to people and ask them “Why the straw or why not the straw that is the question.” Although that is somewhat awkward and kinda an invasion of ones personal space while eating. So I am leaving it up to you people, help me out with my curiosity and let me know what your take on the subject of straws is.
